UWS and choose an accomodation
For my first article, I want to speak about the university and advises to choose an accommodation.
I study at The University of the West of Scotland (UWS) in Paisley. This University is composed of five campuses in the United Kingdom: Paisley, Ayr, London, Lanarkshire and Dumfries.
In Paisley, you can study Business, Engineering, Health, Physical and Chemical Sciences, Social Sciences, Technology and computing. We are around 10 000 students and a lot of foreign students (French, German, Spanish, Italian, Finnish, Portuguese, South African ...). I study in Business and I can say that French people are more present in this section, it is surprising ! An other thing unexpected is the few hours of course we have: it is less than 9 hours by week. Indeed, we have to work by ourselves (reports, team works).
UWS is a modern university where we have a lot of facilities.
In the library, we can found various documentation for our reports. A part of the books are available online so we wan read it on our laptops. It is also a place where we can work: there are numerous computers, tables with a screen for team works, quiet rooms and a cafeteria.
We have access to the Student Union room next to the university. It is a room where there are a bar, sofas, tennis tables, poolrooms, societies games. The student association organize events in this place.
In the same building, we can go to the gym club for free. It is open between noon and 19:30pm from Monday to Friday. You can also join a sport club for £15 the year for foreign students. There a large choice of sports like American football, cheerleading, basketball, handball, badminton...
For the accommodation, I choose to live in a residence of the university. The residence that you can see on the picture is Storie Street. It is front of the entry of the library. On the ground floor, there is a common room where we can watch TV, play to xbox and pool game.We are in flatsharing of 6 people with a shared kitchen. In the room there are a double bed, a bathroom with toilets and a shower, a lot of storage place and a big desk. When you arrive, you receive a kitchen pack with pans and dishes and a bed pack. The price of this accommodation is £104 per week. There are not other things to pay except the washing machine for £2,30.
The university purpose others accommodations between £89 and £149 per week in George Street and Lady Lane. If you want to live in one of the residence of the university, I advise Storie Street which is the best value for money.
You can go on the website of the university if you want more information: UWS .
There is also an other good residence next to the train station, Mypad, which cost between £83 and £96 per week. You can consult the website of MyPad .
The price in Scotland are expensive as you can see. You can search by yourself a flat it can be cheaper but more difficult when you are not here yet. Be careful, there are a lot of students who search a flat in Paisley. You can also search a flat in Glasgow which is at 10 minutes by train, it is better to live but more expensive!
