Best places in Glasgow
Glasgow is the most populous city in Scotland and one of the bigger city in UK.After share you my trips in Scotland , I share you great things to do in Glasgow.
The lighthouse
The Lighthouse is a visitor center, exhibition space and events venue in the heart of Glasgow. It is the Scotland's center for Design and Architecture. At the top of the building, you can admire a beautiful view of Glasgow !
The Kelvingrove Museum
It is one of the most popular free attraction in Scotland located in the west of Glasgow. The museum has 22 themed galleries. It is organized into two halves: Life and Expression. The Life galleries represent natural history, human history and prehistory. The Expression galleries include the fine art collections. The time to visit it is approximately 3 hours. If you enjoy walking, you can continue your visit in the Kelvingrove park.
The University of Glasgow
It is next to the Kelvingrove Museum so you can visit the both in the same day. The building was founded in 1451: it is the fourth older university of the UK. You have the impression of be in Hogwarts!
In the university, you can also visit the Hunterian museum of the anatomist William Hunter: you will see skeletons and ... organs in glass jars !
The Gallery of Modern Art
It is in the center of Glasgow. It is fast to visit with only 4 galleries where you can see works of Andy Wharol for example. You can stay to draw in a where they display artworks of visitors, go in the library or in the café. In front of the building, there is the famous statue of the Duke of Wellington with a traffic cone on his head.
The People's palace
Set on historic Glasgow Green, the People’s Palace tells the story of Glasgow and its people from 1750 to the present day. The city’s social history can be explored through a wealth of historic artifacts, paintings, prints and photographs, film and interactive computer displays. In the Winter Gardens you can wander among the exotic palms and plants or enjoy a coffee or lunch at the café.
Shopping
If you like shopping, Glasgow is a place for you! There are a lot of popular shops for all budgets: Zara, H&M, Primark, New look, Top shop, Urban Outfitters... And a Victoria Secret just open in Buchanan Street, the biggest street for shopping. For luxury products, you have to go to the House of Fraser that regroup all the famous brand on 3 floors.
If you are a student, you often benefice of a discount like in New look where you have -10%.
Bars and nightclubs
In Gasgow, you have a lot of choice to go in bars ! A famous place I can advice is Ashton lane, a little street where there are just bars.
Bars close between midnight and one hour. To continue the night, you can go in a nightclub until 3 or 4 am. Yes, it is surprising because it is very early compared to other countries! You have also a lot of choices to have fun like The Garage or Kokomo. Generally, it is not expensive (around £5 the entry) and sometimes it is free.
Going to a match
Glasgow has two Football teams which are real rivals. The Celtic club in green and white is identified to Catholics Irish. The Glasgow Rangers with Union Jack's colors is the club identified to the Protestant faithful to the crown. The best match to see is the Old firm when the two teams meet each other. I didn't know that so I went to a match of Europa league in the Celtic Park and the ambience was very great!
There are a lot of things to do around Glasgow, you can found other places on People make Glasgow.
Enjoy!
